Which test should I take?
If you are in most Bachelor of Science in English Education programs, then you need to take the Praxis II exam entitled “English Language, Literature and Composition: Content Knowledge.” This is considered a content area exam (it focuses on the content area you plan to teach), as opposed to a pedagogically based exam (one that focuses on teaching skills). The test registration code is 10041.
When should I register?
The list below is accurate for the 2005-2006 school year. If, as you view this page, the chart below has not been updated, then please visit ETS’ Praxis website, select “Praxis II” from the right of the site, and then click “Find a Test Date.” Note the following:
- The Praxis II exams are administered about seven times a year.
- You need to register at least one month in advance to avoid late fees.
- Plan for your scores to take approximately one month to arrive after you have taken your test. Therefore, you need to take the Praxis II no less than one month prior to your student teaching semester.

How do I register for the Praxis II?
The following information is a summary of how you can register for the Praxis II content area exam. For more information, visit ETS’ web page “How To Register for the Praxis Assessment.” You may register online, by mail, or by phone.
Then, you may register online using a credit card (ETS will accept American Express, Discover Network, JCB, VISA, MasterCard, as well as debit/bank cards bearing these logos). You cannot register online 24-7; visit the “register online” link for more details. If you do not mind using your credit card online or are in a hurry, then this option may be best for you.
You may also register by mail. To do this, you will need to download and fill out the PDF Praxis 2005-2006 Registration Form. Instructions to help you are contained in the PDF The Praxis Series 2005-06 Information and Registration Bulletin. If you cannot download a PDF file, telephone ETS to request a Bulletin at 1-800-772-9476. Be warned, though, that ordering time to delivery time of a bulletin requested via telephone may take up to two weeks.
Finally, you may register by phone by dialing 1-800-772-9476. Again, be warned that ETS will charge a $30 fee in addition to other fees if you register by phone. If you’ve waited until the last minute or would rather speak with a real person (as opposed to wading through their website), then this option may be best for you.
What if I don’t pass?Honestly, most students pass their Praxis II on the first try. Different states have different “cut” scores that usually range between 155 and 200 (out of 200 possible points). If you do not meet the cut score, though, it’s not the end of the world.

I am scheduled to take the English Praxis tomorrow and would like some information about the essay portion. I see that the scoring ranges from 0 to 3. What is considered a passing score?
Thanks,
Jackie
Hi Jackie,
I’m afraid that I never took the Praxis II Essay exam. I only took the Content Knowledge exam.
For each essay, it looks like a 2 or 3 would pass and a 1 or 0 would not. All I could find in a hurry was http://www.ets.org/Media/Tests/PRAXIS/pdf/0042.pdf.
Good luck!
